I typed all this out because I'm afraid I'll never get to experience the story this game wanted to tell. I just wish it had spent a little bit longer in development. I'm pretty sure this game isn't gonna get redone and it's unlikely it'll get a sequel with that ending. "Ugh, I'd tell you why I couldn't do that but there's just not enough time." "But if Molstrom shows up you could just blow him the fuck up with the relics." "What? Why isn't there enough time? Why won't you let me help you?" Also, what's going on? What are you trying to do?" "Why? I've been trying to help you the entire game. All for the sake of the biggest and most obvious turn of events to happen this gaming season. Half of me doesn't even blame the party for suspecting him of wanting to conquer the world because he's so vague and unhelpful. Why was he acting like such a shady dickwad. In fact I wish Solus had just been upfront about it to begin with.
Solus treats the party like idiots for having interrupted him, and God knows I felt like one. Where the HELL is my Molstrom fight? We have to fight Solus? Why? Because the rest of the party says so? Doesn't Geddy know Solus? Don't I know Solus? It feels so god damn forced and avoidable it makes me sick. There's too much we're teased, but never told or shown.įinally we get to the thing that bugs me the most: Solus and Molstrom. The loop is brought up at the very end, yet we're never told what it is. Advent gets destroyed, but we never get to see what it was like. Alphonse worked along this guy for hundreds if not thousands of years. If it hadn't been the climax then it would've been the perfect turn in his character. Then, same as Asio, during the climax he suddenly shows a nicer side. What's up with Dirk? He acts like a jerk for the entire game. Old lady was pointless, beyond opening a door. It would've been better if old bro was the one to build it since he was already an established character. Old lady though? She opened a door, was given zero screen time for a while, and then built a rocket ship. There's no room for his development past a fuck up if he's never allowed to fuck up and then fix his fuck up. All failures that do happen are entirely out of Otus' hands. In fact, Otus shows no hesitation and he never fails despite being told he's shit for years. Other people just say he does and won't believe anything to the contrary. He leaves his house in Vellie, and proceeds to never fuck up again. The hug would've been more gratifying if he hadn't moped around a ledge the entire game. The first time outside of the intro he ever shows any positive emotions towards us is the climax. I mean it was a pretty obvious turn of events, but there's nothing ever given to the player to hint at that. He acts like he doesn't care for us at all, but secretly he does. Instead of disappearing, he shows up to sit there and do nothing for a while.
You probably won't even remember them enough to recognize their names as they're talked about later on. They disappear off the face of the earth. The number one issue I have is with the game's story telling.Ĭharacters. The fact that I haven't seen a single person bring up the issues I'm about to talk about has made me feel crazy for the past week since I beat the game. That said I honestly feel like this game receives too much praise and its flaws are not discussed enough. It feels good to play, it looks beautiful, the soundtrack is hit and miss, and there's enough variation in gameplay to keep me interested. Owlboy is a good game deserving of praise. I entered the game as blind as a bat, so I like to think that my review is unbiased. I hadn't heard anything about the game until its release. I picked the game up a while ago on an impulse.
